If you have a store on Shopify, chances are you’re using the Facebook channel to have a shop on your Facebook Page as well (and if you’re not using that Facebook channel, you probably should be. 🙂 ).
You most likely already know that with Shopify and your Facebook Shop, you have the choice of having your customers check out directly on Facebook or check out directly on your website.
But you might not know about a setting within Facebook itself that can help you with your shop, especially if you sell items with variations. This tip will help.
First, let’s look at your two options for checkout:
- Facebook Checkout
- Shopify Website Checkout
Checkout on Facebook Option
With the Facebook checkout option (Elibigle US Customers Check Out on Facebook), customers check out directly on Facebook, never landing on your Shopify website.
There are a couple of things to be aware of if you use this option:
- You MUST accept the Facebook Terms and Conditions if you use this option. Facebook requires that you accept returns on all orders. Click the Facebook Sales Policies for detailed information. If your shop does not generally accept returns, you might not want to use this option.
- If your products have variations, customers checking out on Facebook will not be able to choose the available options, so again, this might not be the option you want to choose.
Checkout on Shopify Option
The other option for Facebook checkout is to have your customers checkout on Shopify (All Customers Check Out on Shopify). With this option selected, your customers will land directly on your Shopify website to finish checking out.
There are a couple of things to be aware of if you use this option:
- Because you are not using the Facebook checkout option, your own store policies apply. This means if you don’t usually accept returns and that is part of your shop policy, you won’t have to accept returns from orders placed using this method.
- With this option, customers will not easily be able to add additional items to their shopping cart because they will have already landed on your checkout page. (NOTE: Customers CAN still backout of the checkout page to add more items, it’s just not as obvious that they can do this).
- Also with this option, by default, customers will be taken directly to your checkout page. Because of this, customers won’t be able to choose any options you might have for that product. That’s where my tip comes in. See below…
Set Up Facebook Shop Setting
If you have variations (options) for your products, you will want to make sure you’ve selected the All Customers Check Out on Shopify option (see above), and you will also want to make a change within your Facebook settings to allow customers to land on your product page, versus landing directly on the checkout page. Here’s how you make this change:
- From your Facebook Page, click the Settings menu in the upper-right corner
- From the left menu on the Settings page, click on Shop
- Turn OFF the Use Checkout URLs feature to have customers land on your product page versus going directly to your shopping cart page
With this option turned off, customers that click to checkout from Facebook to your Shopify website will now land on the product page, NOT the checkout page. From the product page, they will be able to choose any options that are available before checking out.

I hope you’ve found this tip helpful! If you have any questions – please share in a comment below and I will respond.
I’d just like to thank you for this tip. I wondered why there was no option in shopify for this. It’s very frustrating that purchasing facebook via shopify that it goes straight to the checkout, not the product page. Now I see you need to change the settings in your FB page! Easy. Thanks for the hot tip.
Hi there,
thanks for the tip here, however I cannot find the “Shop” settings at all in Point 2 above. I have all the other tabs there apart from “Shop”. I have synced my shopify store with facebook shop for over a week now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Jackie – When you go to your Shopify Dashboard and click on the Facebook Shop Sales Channel, do you see a notice that the shop is still pending approval? Facebook usually takes around 5-7 days to approve a Shopify store on their platform, but sometimes it takes a little bit longer. Once approved, the Shop tab appears automatically on your Facebook Business Page.
Also, did you add the Facebook Sales Channel or the Facebook Marketplace Sales Channel to your Shopify store? If you chose the Facebook Marketplace Sales Channel, only approved items will show up on Facebook.
If you are still having problems with the Facebook – Shopify connection, I encourage you to contact Shopify directly so they can establish that connection for you.
If you have additional questions, please let me know. I hope this helps!
Hi JayDee,
Thank you very much for your response. Actually the shop seems to have integrated already with no issues. But I am trying to change the link on my facebook shop from going straight to the checkout page. I would like the link to direct to Shopify’s product landing page instead. But I can’t find the “shop” settings in facebook to do so. The Shop tab on facebook however is already there. I have checked with Shopify support, they said there is nothing to be done on Shopify and told me to check with Facebook 🙁
This is my facebook page btw: http://www.facebook.com/mellownaturals and the website linked to is http://www.mellownaturals.com.
Thank you in advance 🙂
Hi Jackie – Nice shop!!! If you follow the steps above, you can turn off the feature that brings customers directly to your checkout page.
Go to your Facebook Business Page, click the SETTINGS button in the upper-right corner (as shown in the screenshot above), then click on the SHOP menu in the left settings menu bar, then turn OFF the switch. Once you have that switch turned OFF, customers will land on your product page instead of checkout.
Hope that helps!
Hi JayDee,
Thank you again for the quick response. That’s the thing, I have all the other settings, eg. “featured”, “page support”, “payments” etc… except for “Shop”! haha.
Am I missing something? It is a business page, with ‘shop’ template also FYI.
Jackie – Do you have a screenshot of your Facebook Business Page Settings menu? Maybe I can help troubleshoot more if I could see that.
It sounds like you have everything set up correctly, so I am not sure why you wouldn’t have the Shop menu option in the Settings menu. That’s odd. I’ve not seen that happen before.
Hi Jaydee,
Yes I have screenshots of them, how can I send this across to you? Thank you in advance 🙂
Jackie
Jackie – Email me your screenshot at jd @ thedrawingboard3. com
@Jackie – Thanks for sending the screenshot. As I mentioned in my email to you, you are using your Facebook Business Page through your Facebook Business Manager – that is the reason you are not seeing the Shop option under Settings.
If you remove your Facebook Page from your Facebook Business Manager, you will still be able to run ads, link your product catalog from Shopify to Facebook, and ALL the other options you can do with Facebook Business Manager – you would just be managing your Facebook Page on the Page itself. Not through Business Manager.
Some people prefer managing their Facebook Pages directly, others prefer Facebook Business Manager – it’s a personal choice. I do believe most people manage their Facebook Pages directly.
I hope this, and the email instructions I sent you, help!
Hi JayDee,
Thank you for your response. The thing is currently my ads receipts /invoices are issued under a company which is setup in the Facebook Business Manager. and also I have provided access to third parties to run ads for me etc, under this company. I’m just worried that if I remove the page from Business Manager, will all of this be affected also?
Hi Jackie –
As you know, Facebook Business Manager was created as a way for you to work with agencies regarding your ads, product catalog, etc. With Facebook Business Manager, you can allow these agencies access to your account without giving them your Facebook login password. That is the main reason for the Business Manager.
I have several Facebook Pages for various businesses that I manage. When I first set up my Business Manager account, not knowing any better at the time, I included my Facebook Page within that account. I was using a third party agency to run Facebook ads, and another third party app to load my Shopify product catalog. I personally did NOT like managing my Facebook Page though the Business Manager because it wasn’t easy to switch to my other Facebook Pages (or Groups), or was it easy to switch to my Facebook Personal Profile. After doing research, I found that I could remove my Facebook Page from Business Manager and go back to managing the page separately. That had NO impact on my ads, product catalog, or insights – all of those things still work just fine. And I continue to use Facebook Business Manager for ads, etc. – just not to manage my Page.
Depending on your situation, you might want to keep your Facebook Page within Business Manager. I think it’s a personal preference.
The information I’ve shared here is based on my personal experience. Your situation may be different, so I would encourage you to do an internet search to see how others are managing their pages in order to determine what will work best for you.
I hope this helps!
I believe the checkout to website option has been discontinued by facebook. I think they are trying to reduce liabilities in regards to scams/ fraud and whatnot.
@Nalu – Facebook did discontinue the ability to checkout directly on Facebook. In the past, you could purchase a Shopify store item from a Facebook Shop and then check out without leaving Facebook. The checkout went through Facebook (the sale was registered through your shop).
But, you DO still have the option now of either directing your customers to your Checkout Page or to the Product Listing Page. That’s the choice you can choose through the instructions in this article.
Hope that helps clarify.
I just started a new shop last night. There is no option to check out on website anymore. If you were to delete your current shop and start over, or even start a new business page, you will not have the option. I’ve searched every shop/page setting and it is not available.
@Nalu – In your Shopify Dashboard, have you added the Facebook Sales Channel (NOT the Facebook Marketplace Channel) and connected your Shopify store to your Facebook Business Page?
If you’ve done that, and if Facebook has approved your shop (this can take up to 48 hours), you will see that Facebook has been connected to your Shopify store and that your shop is enabled, by going to your Shopify Dashboard, click on the Facebook Sales Channel, then click on Account.
As I mentioned, customers can no longer complete their purchase directly on Facebook (without leaving Facebook). When they click one of your Shop items (from your Shop tab on your Facebook Page), the only option they have is to checkout on your website.
You can either set that checkout process up so the customer goes directly to your store’s checkout page, or you can have that customer go to the product listing page, where they will have to add the item to their cart, and then check out.
There are NO settings within Shopify for you to specify either the checkout page or the product listing page – those options have to be set through the steps shown in this article, directly on the Facebook Page Settings menu.
I hope this helps!
So the ONLY option now is to check out on Facebook, where they make sure you fulfill your orders. I’ve had the option to check out on another website (Squareup.com) and it worked fine, but I noticed that recently added products were not appearing in my shop so I deleted my shop and started over and now they ask you for your SSN, location, business tax #, and Bank info.
Am I missing something here?
Does selling on another website from facebook only work with shopify? Because I used to have it linked to my square website.
I’ll send you screenshots on the new steps in opening a shop and the options when adding a new product.
I’m experiencing the same thing with the ‘Shop’ tab being gone, so no way to adjust this setting… it was there a couple weeks ago. Can someone actually confirm that this still exists by testing in an actual FB shop? And if so, what are the steps for removing the Facebook page from the FB Business Manager – IF that actually causing this setting to re-appear?
Hi H. Smith – I manage three Facebook Business Pages that are connected to Shopify stores. All three are managed outside of Facebook Business Manager, and when I click on Settings for each Page, the Shop menu option is there – as described in the steps above in this article.
Here is a link with steps on how to remove a Facebook Page from the Facebook Business Manager – https://www.agorapulse.com/blog/remove-page-facebook-business-manager – hopefully the link will help you.
Thanks, I removed my Page from the Business Manger, refreshed everything and that ‘Shop’ setting with the on/off toggle for checkout urls still wasn’t there like it used to be. I contacted FB Ads support again and they have put in a request to their advanced team to look into it. I’ll report back if I get anything figured out.
I hope you hear a resolution and look forward to your reporting back, Heather. Thank you!
This is what I just heard back from Facebook…
“Thank you so much for your patience, I was able to get feedback from our escalation and they were able to let me know that we no longer support that feature, since our platform is changing every day this feature was removed from the platform at the moment. I was able to get you a link in which you can file a bug report on your own if you would like to get more information into this. You will want to scroll down to where it shows “How do I report that something isn’t working on Facebook?” https://www.facebook.com/help/440338062710823“

@Nalu – From the screenshots you emailed me, it looks like you added the Facebook Marketplace Channel to your Shopify store, not the regular Facebook Sales Channel.
The Facebook Marketplace Channel is VERY different, and the rules through selling on the Facebook Marketplace are also very different. Here is a link to more information about the Facebook Marketplace Channel – https://www.facebook.com/business/m/marketplace-ecommerce and here is a link for more information about using Facebook Marketplace Channel with your Shopify store – https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/sell-online/facebook-marketplace
Depending on your business plan, you might want to use Facebook Marketplace Channel with your Shopify store, but if you just want the basic Facebook Sales Channel connected to your Shopify store (where you will see the settings I talk about in this article), you would need to disconnect the Facebook Marketplace Channel – assuming you have already added that to your Shopify Dashboard – and then choose the regular Facebook Sales Channel instead.
Hoping so much you can help me!! I unchecked “Use Checkout URL’s” but it STILL brings you to the checkout page instead of the product page for my products. I need it to go to the product page because I have different sizes for each product! I don’t know what else to do and I can’t find any information out there on how to troubleshoot this. Ideas?!?
Hi Laura – If you’ve verified that the “Use Checkout URLs” option is turned off (go back to settings to ensure the change was saved), then this could be something to do with your Shopify theme and the type of checkout settings you have.
Just so you know, when visitors to your Facebook Shop Tab click on an item, and that item has variations (different sizes, colors, etc), they WILL see a drop-down menu to choose their option before they click “Checkout on Website”. Then, when they land on your website – whether on the Checkout Page or Shopping Cart Page – the option they selected on Facebook WILL appear in the cart. So – visitors CAN choose their size directly from the Facebook Shop Tab.
Some Shopify themes use slide-out carts, some use a cart you have to click on to see the contents. I see your shop uses the slide-out cart. Perhaps if you change that to the regular cart, it will affect your changes to the Facebook Shop.
I hope this helps!
Wow thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Yes the change is definitely saved. I do know that on Facebook, customers are able to change sizes on the drop down menu before checking out. My biggest problem is on Instagram, customers cannot do this. The majority of my customers are on Instagram over Facebook.
I use square space for my website and Shopify for the checkout. I can’t find where to adjust the slide out cart and I’m not sure if it would be on Shopify or square space?
Feeling better because I have confidence you can help me haha
Thanks. THANK you. THANK YOU! Worked exactly as you said on April 30,2020.
Thanks for your note, Jason! I’m happy to hear this worked for you. Wishing you the best with your store!
Is there no way of turning this off if you use the business manager? I use pixel to import my products from my site (not Shopify) which goes via business manager. All my products are personalised so cant be added to the cart without fields being filled in resulting in an empty cart 🙁
Hi Katie – I understand your situation. Unfortunately, I know of no way to change the Facebook shop settings for products uploaded via Facebook Business Manager. Maybe with the new Facebook Shop feature rolling out soon, you’ll be able to add your personalization the way you need it for Facebook checkout. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you further. Best of luck!
