You’ve probably already discovered the Photo Editor when uploading images to your product pages. But have you explored all the options available for editing your images?
This article shows you how to use these free tools, and gives you some cool tips, as well.
Photo Editor
With the built-in Photo Editor, you might not even have to use any other image editor! The tools available help you crop, resize, brighten, adjust color and more.
To Open the Photo Editor:
- From the Product Listing Page, upload a photo
- Once the photo has been uploaded, click on the Edit icon (it looks like a pencil) on the photo you wish to edit
- From the Photo Editor, click on the tools you need in order to achieve the customization you desire
Enhance, Crop, Resize, Orientation, Color, Lighting, Draw, and Text are the tools available.

And here is a video tutorial for using the Photo Editor:
- Make All Images the Same Size – I highly recommend you use the Crop tool to crop the first image of every product in your store into a square image, so the images are all the same size on the Collection pages. I think this makes your website look much more professional and makes it easier for your visitors to browse.
- Brighten Your Backgrounds – Use the Lighting tool to brighten your white backgrounds. This can help to really make your photos stand out! From the Lighting tool you can adjust the brightness (intensity of the light), the contrast (the difference between the brightest and least bright parts of your image), the highlights (the brightest parts of the image), and the shadows (the darkest part of the image.
- Adjust the Color – Use the Color tool to fine-tune the tone of your photos to make them even clearer. You can change the saturation (the intensity of colors), warmth (the color temperature of the image), tint (the colors of the image with a filter), and fade (the tonal balance) of the colors – and these adjustments can really make a big difference to your photo.
- Call Attention to Details – If you want, use the Draw tool to call attention to the details of an item. For example, if you sell vintage (like I do), you could use the Draw tool to draw a circle or an arrow to any imperfections of the item.
- Enhance with Text – If you’d like, you can use the Text tool to add text to your image. For example, you could add your website URL to your images as a watermark. Add the word “SALE” to images of products on sale. You get the idea.
- Remove Background – While the Shopify Image Editor cannot remove backgrounds for images, I wrote about another free tool that you can use – click Background Burner for more information.
